Dolphin and whale watching in Sitges

The waters of the Garraf Coast are home to dolphins and whales. A whale watching excursion from Sitges is a natural experience that few people forget.

🐋 Dolphins in freedom 🌎 Garraf coast 🌿 Natural experience 📍 Port Aiguadolç, Sitges

The Mediterranean off Sitges and the Garraf Coast is much more alive than it appears from the beach. The deep waters extending southward are home to a rich marine biodiversity, and among its most frequent visitors are striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and, in favorable seasons, fin whales and sperm whales that come to these waters in search of food.

A whale watching excursion from Sitges is one of those experiences that stay with you for a long time. Seeing a group of dolphins swimming alongside the boat, jumping on the bow or simply accompanying you for a few minutes is something that connects with something very primitive and very human at the same time.

For a quiet whale watching excursion with a skipper who knows the areas, the skippered whale watching sailboat is our usual recommendation: sailing with a slow motor or sail generates less noise and does not scare the animals. If you prefer more speed to cover more distance and reach more distant areas, the Barracuda 545 whale watching speedboat is the most versatile option.

A Natural Experience Out of the Ordinary

Cetaceans are not in an aquarium. They are in their environment. And that difference changes everything.

🐋
Animals in the wild

It is not an organized show. The dolphins and whales you see are wild, in their natural environment. An authentic and unrepeatable experience.

Unique images

A dolphin jumping next to the boat, a pod swimming under the bow…. The photos taken on these excursions are some of the most impressive in existence.

🌿
Respectful

We sail with respect for the animals, keeping a prudent distance and without abrupt maneuvers that may disturb them.

Marine biodiversity

In addition to cetaceans, the waters of the Garraf Coast are home to sea turtles, tuna and a wealth of underwater life that surprises visitors.

Dolphins and Whales in the waters of Sitges

The western Mediterranean, and especially the marine corridor off the Garraf Coast, is one of the most biodiverse marine areas in the Mediterranean. The proximity of the continental slope, where the shallow waters of the shelf drop sharply to great depths, creates ideal conditions for cetaceans to find abundant food.

What species can we see?

The most frequent species in these waters is the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), which forms herds of several individuals and has a very active and visible behavior. Also common is the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), larger and known to approach boats. In summer and early autumn, when schools of anchovies and sardines arrive, it is possible to see fin whales, the second largest whale species on the planet, which can reach 24 meters.

Combining sighting with other activities

The whale watching excursion combines very well with other activities at sea. You can leave early in the morning, when the sea is usually calmer and the cetaceans more active, see what the sea has to offer and then anchor in a cove to swim and eat on board. It is also compatible with fishing excursions or diving trips if you want a full day of marine nature.

When to leave?

The most favorable season for whale watching in the Sitges area is from spring to autumn, with July, August and September as the most productive months. The wind and the state of the sea are determining factors: days with little swell and calm seas are the best for detecting the movements of the animals on the surface. Ask us before booking and we will inform you of the expected conditions. If you are also curious about the sunset from the sea, we can organize a day combining both experiences.

Prices sighting excursion: sailing boat with skipper from 150€/hour or 450-600€ half day (recommended option for cetaceans). Barracuda 545 speedboat from 100€/hour. Groups of up to 10 people in sailboat, 7 in speedboat. All inclusive price.

Whale watching questions

Is it safe to see dolphins so close?

Completely. Dolphins are curious and sociable animals that often approach boats voluntarily. They do not represent any danger. What we do is keep a respectful distance and let them decide if they want to approach. There are no chasing maneuvers or harassment of the animals. The objective is a calm and respectful observation.

At what time of the year are there more dolphins?

The most favorable season is from May to October, with the summer and early autumn months being the most active. In these months, the greater presence of fish in the waters of the Garraf Coast attracts cetaceans more frequently. Out of season sightings are also possible, although less likely.

Is the sighting guaranteed?

No, and any company that guarantees sightings is not being honest. Cetaceans are wild animals in the wild and their presence cannot be predicted with certainty. That said, the sighting rate in the Garraf Coast area is quite high in favorable season, especially for dolphins. The experience of the skipper and knowing the usual areas of activity of the animals significantly increases the probabilities.

Which boat is best for sighting?

For pure sighting, the sailboat is the best option because sailing generates less noise and is less invasive for the animals. To cover more distance and a larger search area, a motorboat such as the Barracuda 545 offers more mobility and speed. The choice depends on whether you prioritize the quality of the encounter with the animals or the extent of the search. Consult us and we will recommend you according to your preferences.

Are there also whales in Sitges?

Yes, although they are less frequent than dolphins. The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) is the largest cetacean regularly sighted in Catalan waters. It can reach up to 24 meters in length and is an impressive spectacle when it emerges to breathe. Its presence is more frequent in summer and early autumn, associated with the large schools of krill and anchovy that concentrate at this time. Occasional sightings of sperm whales have also been recorded.
